Did you put a disclaimer on the back of thesticker? I did not know. Then shut your filthy mouth, like away. People like away. Look as much as you want, I guess.Kids. Yep. But this episode we're talking about a very particular song calledright now by Van Halen, and this was off the album for unlawful carnalknowledge, which came out in one thousand...

...nine hundred and ninety one, anda song was written by Van Halen. Sammy Hagar wrote the lyrics and EddieVan Halen wrote the music, and Hey Gar said the lyrics he wrote forright now where the best he ever wrote for Van Halen Song, as heand Eddie wanted to get serious and talk about world issues. And I'll tellyou what, what we'll dig into the lyrics. But yeah, they werepretty spot on, even more so in the video actually. But what arewhat are some of your memories of this song? Dave, I got acouple really kind of stay on vibe with a video. I think everybody's seenthat at least a billion times if you were alive or young teenager or adultat that point in time. And they kind of stole some stick from mypals. A comedy troupe out of Canada called the kids in the hall.you familiar with the kids in the hall at all, drew? Yes,remember the head crusher? Oh, yeah, Yep, yeah, they pull thatlittle stunt with Michael Anthony in the video and I go, Hey,hope you guys are sending the kids in a hall at check. And thenat this when this song came out, they also did a tie in withCrystal Pepsi, which I had. This is very embarrassing, by the way. So can we just keep this a secret amongst ourselves? Yeah, Iwon't tell anybody. Thank you. Thank you so much. I was likein love with this this girl. You know when you're a kid and youhave that crush and you think, oh my God, my life revolves aroundthis person, like you know, I'm in their orbit, I can't escape. And her name was crystal. So when we didn't see eyed eye,I remember fleeing to the woods with a bottle of crystal Pepsi in my pocketand I would sit on a rock all lonely in the middle of woods runningby pine trees and various shrubberies, drink my crystal Pepsi and think of theweed last what. So was your disagreement about whether they like the taste ofCrystal Pepsi or not? No, it...

...it wasn't. I like the tasteof it. I really enjoyed it at the time. I drink craploads ofit, but I also drank a lot of jolt, so I don't know, my taste buds were probably fried. MMM maybe. Yeah, jolt willdo that too. HMM. Yeah, yeah, I remember when this cameout, lots of radio play and was on MTV nonstop thanks to it's awesomevideo. And also, yeah, like you mentioned Crystal Pepsi. I alsomissed that. And when that came out in the early S, I remembersome kid in my science class that a blind taste test to see if oneif people could tell the difference between Christa Pepsi and Regular Pepsi, and thenalso which one they preferred. I forget how many people could tell the difference, because I think you can definitely tell the difference. And also I thinklike seventy five percent said they preferred the regular Pepsi to Chrystala Pepsi. Itwas kind of out slide. Yeah, but I personally I prefer Christa Pepsi. But I'm also weird. But now you drew. I didn't mean tojump in front of you there. Okay, I think I appault. No,well, maybe a little bit, a little bit, I have beenknown to be a freight train. But listen, I'm only doing this episodebecause I want to talk about soda. That's the only reason why I'm here. Sure, so, you know, music be damned. So here's aquestion for you. Do you remember? Okay, Soda. No, okay, this this was a I don't remember who owned them. It might evenbeing coca cool or is something else, but they had these really off beatlabels to the cans and and they'd had a hot line that you could call. And when you call the hot line there be a guy who'd say tohear a bird Chirp, press one, and he'd press one and there's justhim going Chirp, Chirp, Chirp, chirp. It was this really offbeat brand of humor associated with the brand. So if you never and it waspretty good too, it's like this really a mix of a bunch ofdifferent so this is hard to put your finger on it exactly tasted like, but for sure it was definitely okay. I don't know if it was thethe okay phone number, but I remember,...

...and this is probably like twenty yearsago, so like late s early two thousand, there was a phonenumber and I forget what it was, but it was like, if youwant to hear a duck quack, press five and you're like press five andthen you just hear quack, like that was that was it, and thenit would hang up. That was could have been the same of you it. It might have been. Yeah, I don't know if that was enough, but so definitely go online check that out. Trust me, I lovethat stuff. Yeah, I wish it'd bring it back, because they broughtback crystal Pepsi for a short bit, to which I did not wave mynose at that nostalgia trail. I said, you know what, no, I'mnot doing it had its time, it's over, like the dinosaurs,it's extinct. Goodbye. Yeah, now, so here's the thing, right, and I yes, they brought it back, as is probably a coupleof years ago now. I want to say two thousand and sixteen or maybetwo thousand and seventeen. I still so. I didn't know they were bringing itback, but one day I was, I think, at target and theyhad like one of those kiosks and they had all the Queen PEPs there. I was like no shit, so I bought a bottle of about atwenty ounce bottle. It's still sitting unopened in my closet in my bedroom. To the other two reasons why, the two reasons why won I. Istill believe Crystal Pepsi's amazing. However, I haven't had it in like twentyfive years. So what if I don't like it anymore? Right, whatif my taste buds have changed so drastically that I don't like Crystal Pepsi Anymore? That would crush part of my childhood. Right. Okay, so that's partof the reason why I have not had it. The other reason inthe twenty ounce bottle they're sixty nine grams of sugar. Oh that's insane. That's good for you, it's well. So here's the thing. That AmericanHealth Association suggests and added Sugar Limit of no more than thirty six grams ofsugar for most men. Yeah, so double it up, that's yeah, and twenty ounce bottle. Yeah, double dipping on the sugar. Hey.Well, you know, listen, it's a one time deal. And thenI I was actually thinking like you were...

...going to sell it on Ebay orsomething. You know, I'm going to wait another twenty years and I'm goingto put this son of a bitch on Ebay. But the whole thing aboutyou like worrying about, you know, not loving it anymore, is it'skind of funny to me, be honest. I don't know, like this isa weird, irrational fighter to have that funny day. Well, Imean, come on, it's a syrup infuse with Seltz your water, andyou're afraid that the the love will die. I might, and that's why I'mtrying to steer golder for not happening. Thank God for the sugar, then. So don't bitch about the sugar when ask the one thing there's probablystopping you more than anything else from dipping your toe back in the the lakeknown as Crystal Pepsi. Yeah, and by the way, Mountain Deuce, seventy seven Grahams of sugar and a twenty ounce bottle. Something else I don'tdrink. I just I used to love. I used to love mountain dew back. Yeah, I would drink that. Let's not talk about Van Halen andyou just give us nutritional labels for like every product in your house.I will, I will. Did you ever have Jones Soda? I havenot. I know I'm familiar with it, but I have not Drunka I'm nota big Soda Guy, to be honest with you overall, because Ido not care for carbonation. Fair enough. Yeah, I'm know. I'm alsonot a big Soda Guy. I probably mean I I would say thelast like maybe twelve, thirteen years, I really don't drink soda like atall. Like I maybe I'll have like a glass of ginger ail or rootbeer maybe once or twice a year at most. Like if we're going outto get like a there's one place at the beach like to go to thehave pizza there and it before there, I'll maybe I'll grab like a rootbeer or something like that. But that's about as crazy as I get withwith Soda. But when I was like in my early S, I wouldthere's a place right across the street from my Church and they had Jones Soda. There sisicigs. They'd have all these like weird flavors. So I alwayswould always grab a bottle of Jones Soda. That was always pretty cal you're oneof those guys, like the people who drink orbits. Look, it'sgot little bubbles in it go down your...

...throat. To me it's like adrinking boogers, but whatever. No, I don't drink bookers. I hopenow here's so here's here's the big question. Right, it's not about chrystal Pepsior Pepsi, Pepsi or Die Pepsi? All right, here's a real cross. Right, we're talking. Let's get back to van Halen here. Are Your Team Dave or team Sammy or I? Or Are you team Gary? Oh, Geez, lwit, who would be team Gary? Probably youright, you be that one guy about new no is team. I thinkGary has his fair amount of nutrius sweet or equal to to entice you, babe, rather than real sure, but I'm not a van Halen Guy.I've ever been a big Van Halen Fan, I mean at all. But ifI were to in fact shoose, I would have to go with diamonddave a hundred and ten percent because, not being a true fan of theirmusic, I'm going for the personality and the Panash all the way. Allright, how about you? I'm I'm Sammy. I'm a Hagar. I'ma Haygar Fan. I like Dave too. I don't. I don't not likehim. I I think just probably, and it's probably the because that Igrew up with with Hagar. So by time I was listening to likekind of rock music like that is probably like late mid to late s andthat's when Sammy was the lead singer. So yeah, it's like it kindof grew up with, like songs like why can't this be love? Youknow, that was one of their big ones. When it's love, likeit's a lot of love songs, and then you get, you know, for unlawful cardinal knowledge and you have, you know, like we talked ortalking about right now, right now, top of the world. So youknow, there was that's kind of what I grew up with. So Ifeel like I kind of leaned towards, you know, Sammy, but Ilike Dave Gary. I like Gary when he was with extreme. That wasthat was a good mix, but not so much the one album they didwith van Halen. But yeah, you know, I've already made it prettywell known that I am not averse to...

...sugar. So I think if anySammy Hagar van Halen Song appealed to me at all more than any other,it might have to be pound cake. MMM. But yeah, like whenI start talking about the track listing, like, I don't know, Icould rattle off probably more songs that had David Lee Roth on them other thanSammy Hagar. And I remember I owned, when David Lee Roth went on hisown, I own skyscraper. Oh Really? Yeah, I had thaton our record. Yeah, so I was cool man. Yeah, thatlucky me. You are lucky. I know because I work with you.Damn right, Mister, MR running mix, no sugar guy. That's right, that's right. Cool down, thanks. Let me. Let me cool itdown a bit here, but let's heat it back up because we're goingto talk about the hot one hundred chart. See this another good another good segue. But yeah, this song. I thought the song actually peaked alittle bit higher. This song actually peaked at number fifty five on the USbillboard hot one hundred back in March of one thousand, nine hundred and ninetytwo, and currently Van Halen has over twelve million monthly listeners on spotify,so pretty decent following still. But let's get back to the hot one hundred. The top five started with save the best for last by Vanessa Williams, and the top spot. It's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Ilove that song. Tears in heaven by don't say it, by Air Clapton, was number two. Remember the time, by Michael Jackson. Was Three. To be with you by Mr Big was for and I'm too sexy.By right said Fred was number five. That's a great song. Yeah, some other great tuos on two charts were I love your smile by Shanise atnine, at such a great tune. Beating the beast by Seline Dealon, and my boy pee Bo Bryson was at fourteen. Diamonds and pearls by princein a new power generation was twenty one. Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana wastwenty six one by you two was thirty. Mama, I'm coming homeby Ozzy Osbourne, at thirty five.

I can't make you love me byBonnie rate, at forty two. Another great tune in Bohemian rhapsody still kindof hanging on from Wayne's world. Was that forty nine? There there kindof rebirth of Bohemian rhapsody the second time around. Oh yeah, so,yeah, it's big. So that was huge. That was that was thethat was the chart. Now how does this song compare to other songs onthe album? Now, this was actually the first van Halen album I actuallyowned. I love this album. It starts off with their song pound cake, which you talked about before. That was the first single on this album, which, by the way, for unlawful carnage. Get it? Yeah, and every a many out there get it, Huh, and acurated togetherpeople. Yeah, yeah, anyway, Pou clever action. Yeah, that'sit. Is, it is. And then he listened to pound cake andhe listen lyrics. is like kind of makes sense that the song kicks thealbum off right. Eddie's using their drill in the guitar, which is PrettyDamn cool, great idea and has a really cool sound. The song musicallyis awesome lyrically and kind of mediocre with the lyrics, but the music Iabsolutely love. I could listen to that song all day. That we getJudgment Day, which is a cool tune. A handful of other good songs onthe album, but what I found interesting is that their two biggest singlesright now, on top of the world, were actually on the back half ofthe album. Not Saying you can't do that, just interesting that theirtwo singles were put towards the back, or two of their singles were puttowards the back. Now three hundred and sixteen, I love that song andactually makes you a little teary eyed. Now three hundred and sixteen is it'sWolfgang van Halen's birthday. That's Eddie Song and he wrote that for him, just a little guitar Ode to his son. And I remember listening to that whenit came out and I liked it, and then I listened to it againwhen I became a dad and you know, it hit a little bitharder. You know is a little bit closer to home, and now withEddie passing, you know it's on another level now. You know it's sucha cool song, you know as good stuff. And then you have topof the world, great tune. I...

...feel like they use this all thetime for sports teams winning championships in the early S. it's kind of theeasy song to play. But this is all around the good album. Ithink right now fits in nicely. It definitely stands out. That's very kindof like piano heavy, but they tried some new things on this album, like the drill and the guitar and poundcake in the beginning of the album andand this song. So I think it's a good fit. But how aboutyou? You liked any other songs on this album besides poundcake? I'm not. No, I'm not a big fan of this album, but I doget to say this. You know, for a guy who's so afraid ofdrinking crystal Pepsi because of the sugar content, is such a big as softly,I'm afraid if we cut open one of your veins, purecane sugar, which is poor, out of it. That's not nice. Why would youwant to do I know, but I'm just saying, though. I mean, come on, you, you're just talking about three hundred and sixty andlisten, the sentiment is true. Don't get you know. I agree withyou. This lovely thing, but even you said that you're getting TIRI EIED, getting a little misty over this kind of stuff. We know you hadteddy bear. That's what you are, drew. Yeah, I mean, and I also like listen to it right at you know, not too longafter Eddie passed away. was that about a month ago now? So Imean it was, yeah, hearing it and then, you know, knowingwhat it was for. Yeah, it's yeah, don't cry now, we'reon a be strong. You got an issue. He is a tissue,Yep, but lyrically right, getting back to right now. I think lyrics. I think the lyrics are great. It's a very motivational song. Ifeel like this hits even harder now I'm forty. When this came out Iwas like eleven or twelve song, like yeah, I got time. Whenyou get a little older you realize you don't. So you need to seizeevery moment you can, and that's what the song is pretty much about. You know. Yeah, what. Well, what would you like to mention here, Dave? I guess I just think the very simplistic. There's notmuch to them. I when I originally looked at the lyrics, I thought, hey, any thirteen year old kid in a garage band could have writtenthis. It wasn't like an act of a wonderful or talented lyricist. ButI will admit this. Now we're talking...

...about age, where I'm at inmy life, the lyrics make me feel like shit. Well, sometimes, sometimes they make me feel like crap. Yeah, I'm like, what haveI accomplished? What have I done? Damn it, nofect drew, giveme that tissue. I mean it's a lot. Sammy, make me questionmy life and all my choices. To Quila guisland bastard. Yeah, butI but no, I mean it's a lot of this is like Gris islike great dad advice. You know, the song starts off, you know, don't want to wait till tomorrow. Why put it off another day?One by one, little problems build up and stand in our way. Likethat's like spot on advice, though. I mean you're right, it is. It is simplistic, but it's not wrong. It's listen, true,it's right. Now, remember the PSA's from when we're kids. It waslike a one, I think, which is only local for me growing upin Massachusetts, but it was these thieves. They were run around a little kidand they're like, if to tell one lie, it leads to Mounother. If you tell little to lies. Oh brother, you're in trouble.Up to you ears. So like hearing that in this to me it'slike this really simple. I don't know, I'm not overly impressed by it.I don't take a lot of meaning out of it. You know whatI mean, Jellybean, fine, okay, I I'm sorry to be crapping onyour parade here, but I'll why I'm not. I'm not overly impressedwith these lyrics. Now, all right, so lyrics, hit me with somethingelse. I'll let me hit you with this now. Okay, let'slet's change gears and let's talk about the video. Now, the video.Actually rewatched it and I jotted down some of these the little like slogans thatthey had in there, and I'll tell you what, I'm going to reada handful of them off because they are insanely pertinent to this day, especiallyright now. We're recording this on November fourth, so we're still in themidst of the two and twenty election here, but it's it's interesting. So I'mjust going to rattle some of them off right right now, Opportunity ispassing you by right now. You could...

...be outside right like we always talkabout, you know, people staring at screens, you know, and this, like I said, this was written in the early s, like thirtyyears ago almost, and I feel like now, like people definitely should beoutside. I get outside more. Right now, guilt is turning someone insideout. This one right here really was like wow, right now, oilcompanies and old men are in control. You're not wrong, and nothing's changedin thirty years. Right now, nothing is more expensive than regret. That'sthat's pretty deep, man. You know, that's that's a great that's a greatlittle statement there. Right now is just a space between ice ages. That makes me feel nice and insignificant. Right now, that truth is beingobscured. Right now, science is building a better tomato. Now, Ido like science, and they're beyond burgers. But but let's let's talk of somehealth nutritional facts. Your guys, just be careful, okay, becausethey're just because they're Vegan doesn't mean they're healthy. Right. Those things haveway less cholesterol than regular burghers, but they have a ton of sodium inthem. So just keep that in mind, people. All right, if youdon't believe it, just check drew's freezer. That's right. Right now, someone's working too hard for minimum wage. Right now, your parents miss you. Right now, no one is safe from loneliness. This isn't awere in a pandemic. Right. That's pretty spot on. For Right now, right now, at time, is having its way with you, asit always does. Right now, our government is doing things we think onlyother countries do. Right now, you aren't doing what you most wish youwere. Boy, I think about that every day, from nine hundred tofive, and right now is harder than it looks. So, yeah, well, I will. I do have to say this is I think thoselittle tidbits from the video are more impressive than the actual song lyrics. Butwhat have we learned from any of these things over the past a few decades? Nothing, nothing, it's nothing's changed.

So, you know, we allhad him flash before our eyes way back when and we're like, yeah, that's right, there are crusty old sons of pictures running oil and doingthis in the government's up to no good and yes, let it go allright, thanks, Van Halen. Thanks. Yeah, we're just going to ignorethat blissfully for the rest of our lives. Yeah, well, youknow, they're they're calling it out, they're doing their job. They're they're, HMM, drawing attention to some things here. So, okay, youknow right now, you know someone working too hard for minimum wage? Yeah, there's definitely people that are, you know, kind of getting the shift, so to speak. So, Oh, yeah, sure, everybody. Yeah, yeah, pass you baby, this song is but yeah, sothat the song is basically just kind of get off your ass and live yourlife and do the things you need to do and what to do right now. Don't wait, get after it or only here for a short time.Even if you live to be a hundred, that's still a blip on the radar. So get after it. and which basically everything I just read andeverything I just said, I feel like I should take this device and actuallyquit my day job. But you have of us have like no and howmany of us have nine to five jobs that we hate? You know, how many of us are unhappy in a variety of situations, like a badrelationship, we hang out with people we don't necessarily like. You know, sometimes you got to do what's right for you. YEP, everybody raising theirhands right now. Are Create enough wind to power all the earth's wind farmsfor the next century. Clean Energy. Man, I love it. Yeah, so all of us who raise your raise your hands if you're sure. We're sure. We hate our jobs and yeah, what have you. Yeah, totally. So now I feel miserable, I feel bad. Cheer me up, leave. This song is striking me down, man. Well, let's let's let's cheer it up, because we're at R at our final verdicthere. So, all right, Dave, right now by Van Halen. Yeah, what do you think? Do you think the song is a legithit, or do you think this is a song gone wrong? Okay,so here I am with my opinions on this is. I I've already statedeverything before that would lead you to believe I'm going to say this is asong gone wrong. However, it is...

...a very well crafted little diddy. It has quite an extreme amount of relistenability. Wherein is it something that I'm clamoringfor? No, I mentioned before I don't care for Van Halen. But has it aged incredibly well? Yes. Do we heed any of the messagingthat drew mentioned from the video? Absolutely not, but if it cameon the radio I would not be prone to change the dial. It doeshave a lot of elements that are key for a hit song. So thereforeI'm going to say well crafted, sounds good, stands a test of time. So legit hit baby, all right, drew. Yeah, so I thinkright now by Van Halen, the song is very unique. You know, it starts off with a guitar legend, Barly, one of the best guitarsof all time, playing a beautiful piano riff. Musically, once thesong gets going, everything blends in perfectly. I think you know, Eddie's guitaris there. That's what he's known for, right, but it's notoverpowering and sure he can take over a song with his guitar, but he'ssmartly knows what sounds good. So yeah, there's a guitar and the song there. He does have a solo in there, but he builds it innicely. Sammy's lyrics. They're good, you know. Are they the bestin the world? Maybe not, but I do think they are good. You know, it's not it's not wrong. It's, you know, like properI think again, I think this is kind of like proper dad advicethat would give your kids. You know, it is. I think his voicesounds great. The content is beyond perfect. This isn't your typical vanHalen Song, but that's fine. And these guys traveling a little different,a little outside their comfort zone, and you know what, I think theystruck golds and and the song alone is perfection, I think. And thenwhen you add in the video. I haven't watched that probably since the midS and I wish I had watched it since then and before now. ButHoly Shit, the video is such a great concept and they nailed the execution. You know right now, it's the total package. Great Song, amazingvideo. Hell, throw me about crystal...

Pepsi Right now, because the songis a legit hit. You have what. I don't need to throw it.You idea. I'm lovel my closet and drink it. You. It'sin your closet. Yeah, just what it's calling out. You. Drinkme true, pop the CAP, drue. I'll tell you what, if Pepsidoes bring it back, I will definitely buy a bottle and drink itright on the spot and, dude, we'll see what happens. God.Yeah, and please make it a talking soda. That's what it's going totake. It's going to need this. What I was just doing to you. The soda actually needs to in fact do the same thing. Needs tospeak. Don't abandon me, drew, in your closet, Drewe hold onthem, tricking my crystal pipsy, checking to make sure it's not possessed. All right. So, yeah, so we have we have our verdict here. We both we both think it's a legit hit. But HMM, let'scheck and see what the fans have to say about it, because we careand we want to hear what they have to say. You've got that right. All right, the fans have spoken and seventy four percent said this songis a legit hit. Huh, thought that would have been a little bithigher, to be honest with you. Like I could see how you knowit. Maybe there's like some Van Hail fans out there that maybe aren't Sammyfans. I don't know. Maybe a would rather go with Dave, butI don't know. But we did get some feedback, which is pretty good. So at Ryan Boem said incredible song. At J Bowen something to said,no doubt really powered by that bad as video. In an era,in the early S, of such change and optimism, it really spoke tothe Times. At Gengen defo said nothing about Van Halen is a hit andI stand by this forever. So thanks, JEN at. I am Pol Niquesaid, legit great song. It's not just a song, it's ananthem to get up and do it, that thing that's been burning inside you. Don't wait till tomorrow, do it right now. And this catchy asheck. And at Ravioli, I are said, I love that video too. So that's what we got. Yeah,...

...all right, and I'm going tobeat a dead horse. I'm going to ask you. Is this partof your motivation mix? It's not. I feel like I need to addit, though. Okay, it's definitely on. It is definitely on mys mix that I have a like a separate van Hammon mix, and that'son there too. That's such a cop out, man. You keep givingme that excuse. It's on my s, but it's not on my frind fromthe S. I know, I know, I know, I know, but, like I've we've gone over this. That's why I called itbeating a dead horse about how you have a mix for everything. You're likegoing to home depot mix correct. So you know. I know. Ishop at Leves, okay, I'm sorry, free plug for both of them,I suppose, as if they care, but still, you know what Imean. Like, yeah, I'M gonna go buy I don't even know, ice mix something. I just a most random crap. I could imaginethe tying my shoelaces mix coming from you. You know what I mean. Whatof what if people were velcrow? What? What? What do youwhat did that come from? While you're saying tying your shoelaces? But whatif some yeah, L Crow, well, do you probably have that geared andready to the I have vel crow shoes mix, or I wear flipflops with socks mix? I don't know. I don't assume you have everything underthe Sun Ready to rock and roll. So when you say Oh, some, my my s the s mix is just such a broad thing.I need it. Well, yeah, specific, yeah, you know.Anyway. Okay, sorry about that. You always, you know, youalways like to, you know, bust my chops about playlists. Hey,you love I'll you know.
