So, nonetime toxic adhesive, by the way too. So that's right. Yep, you can lick them. I don't think you should, but you could. I mean you could. I we don't. We don't advise onlooking that. Did you put a disclaimer on the back of the sticker? I did not know. Then shut your filthy mouth, like away. People like away. Look as much as you want, I guess. Kids. Yep. But this episode we're talking about a very particular song called right now by Van Halen, and this was off the album for unlawful carnal knowledge, which came out in one thousand...

...nine hundred and ninety one, and a song was written by Van Halen. Sammy Hagar wrote the lyrics and Eddie Van Halen wrote the music, and Hey Gar said the lyrics he wrote for right now where the best he ever wrote for Van Halen Song, as he and Eddie wanted to get serious and talk about world issues. And I'll tell you what, what we'll dig into the lyrics. But yeah, they were pretty spot on, even more so in the video actually. But what are what are some of your memories of this song? Dave, I got a couple really kind of stay on vibe with a video. I think everybody's seen that at least a billion times if you were alive or young teenager or adult at that point in time. And they kind of stole some stick from my pals. A comedy troupe out of Canada called the kids in the hall. you familiar with the kids in the hall at all, drew? Yes, remember the head crusher? Oh, yeah, Yep, yeah, they pull that little stunt with Michael Anthony in the video and I go, Hey, hope you guys are sending the kids in a hall at check. And then at this when this song came out, they also did a tie in with Crystal Pepsi, which I had. This is very embarrassing, by the way. So can we just keep this a secret amongst ourselves? Yeah, I won't tell anybody. Thank you. Thank you so much. I was like in love with this this girl. You know when you're a kid and you have that crush and you think, oh my God, my life revolves around this person, like you know, I'm in their orbit, I can't escape. And her name was crystal. So when we didn't see eyed eye, I remember fleeing to the woods with a bottle of crystal Pepsi in my pocket and I would sit on a rock all lonely in the middle of woods running by pine trees and various shrubberies, drink my crystal Pepsi and think of the weed last what. So was your disagreement about whether they like the taste of Crystal Pepsi or not? No, it...

...it wasn't. I like the taste of it. I really enjoyed it at the time. I drink craploads of it, but I also drank a lot of jolt, so I don't know, my taste buds were probably fried. MMM maybe. Yeah, jolt will do that too. HMM. Yeah, yeah, I remember when this came out, lots of radio play and was on MTV nonstop thanks to it's awesome video. And also, yeah, like you mentioned Crystal Pepsi. I also missed that. And when that came out in the early S, I remember some kid in my science class that a blind taste test to see if one if people could tell the difference between Christa Pepsi and Regular Pepsi, and then also which one they preferred. I forget how many people could tell the difference, because I think you can definitely tell the difference. And also I think like seventy five percent said they preferred the regular Pepsi to Chrystala Pepsi. It was kind of out slide. Yeah, but I personally I prefer Christa Pepsi. But I'm also weird. But now you drew. I didn't mean to jump in front of you there. Okay, I think I appault. No, well, maybe a little bit, a little bit, I have been known to be a freight train. But listen, I'm only doing this episode because I want to talk about soda. That's the only reason why I'm here. Sure, so, you know, music be damned. So here's a question for you. Do you remember? Okay, Soda. No, okay, this this was a I don't remember who owned them. It might even being coca cool or is something else, but they had these really off beat labels to the cans and and they'd had a hot line that you could call. And when you call the hot line there be a guy who'd say to hear a bird Chirp, press one, and he'd press one and there's just him going Chirp, Chirp, Chirp, chirp. It was this really off beat brand of humor associated with the brand. So if you never and it was pretty good too, it's like this really a mix of a bunch of different so this is hard to put your finger on it exactly tasted like, but for sure it was definitely okay. I don't know if it was the the okay phone number, but I remember,...

...and this is probably like twenty years ago, so like late s early two thousand, there was a phone number and I forget what it was, but it was like, if you want to hear a duck quack, press five and you're like press five and then you just hear quack, like that was that was it, and then it would hang up. That was could have been the same of you it. It might have been. Yeah, I don't know if that was enough, but so definitely go online check that out. Trust me, I love that stuff. Yeah, I wish it'd bring it back, because they brought back crystal Pepsi for a short bit, to which I did not wave my nose at that nostalgia trail. I said, you know what, no, I'm not doing it had its time, it's over, like the dinosaurs, it's extinct. Goodbye. Yeah, now, so here's the thing, right, and I yes, they brought it back, as is probably a couple of years ago now. I want to say two thousand and sixteen or maybe two thousand and seventeen. I still so. I didn't know they were bringing it back, but one day I was, I think, at target and they had like one of those kiosks and they had all the Queen PEPs there. I was like no shit, so I bought a bottle of about a twenty ounce bottle. It's still sitting unopened in my closet in my bedroom. To the other two reasons why, the two reasons why won I. I still believe Crystal Pepsi's amazing. However, I haven't had it in like twenty five years. So what if I don't like it anymore? Right, what if my taste buds have changed so drastically that I don't like Crystal Pepsi Anymore? That would crush part of my childhood. Right. Okay, so that's part of the reason why I have not had it. The other reason in the twenty ounce bottle they're sixty nine grams of sugar. Oh that's insane. That's good for you, it's well. So here's the thing. That American Health Association suggests and added Sugar Limit of no more than thirty six grams of sugar for most men. Yeah, so double it up, that's yeah, and twenty ounce bottle. Yeah, double dipping on the sugar. Hey. Well, you know, listen, it's a one time deal. And then I I was actually thinking like you were...

...going to sell it on Ebay or something. You know, I'm going to wait another twenty years and I'm going to put this son of a bitch on Ebay. But the whole thing about you like worrying about, you know, not loving it anymore, is it's kind of funny to me, be honest. I don't know, like this is a weird, irrational fighter to have that funny day. Well, I mean, come on, it's a syrup infuse with Seltz your water, and you're afraid that the the love will die. I might, and that's why I'm trying to steer golder for not happening. Thank God for the sugar, then. So don't bitch about the sugar when ask the one thing there's probably stopping you more than anything else from dipping your toe back in the the lake known as Crystal Pepsi. Yeah, and by the way, Mountain Deuce, seventy seven Grahams of sugar and a twenty ounce bottle. Something else I don't drink. I just I used to love. I used to love mountain dew back. Yeah, I would drink that. Let's not talk about Van Halen and you just give us nutritional labels for like every product in your house. I will, I will. Did you ever have Jones Soda? I have not. I know I'm familiar with it, but I have not Drunka I'm not a big Soda Guy, to be honest with you overall, because I do not care for carbonation. Fair enough. Yeah, I'm know. I'm also not a big Soda Guy. I probably mean I I would say the last like maybe twelve, thirteen years, I really don't drink soda like at all. Like I maybe I'll have like a glass of ginger ail or root beer maybe once or twice a year at most. Like if we're going out to get like a there's one place at the beach like to go to the have pizza there and it before there, I'll maybe I'll grab like a root beer or something like that. But that's about as crazy as I get with with Soda. But when I was like in my early S, I would there's a place right across the street from my Church and they had Jones Soda. There sisicigs. They'd have all these like weird flavors. So I always would always grab a bottle of Jones Soda. That was always pretty cal you're one of those guys, like the people who drink orbits. Look, it's got little bubbles in it go down your...

...throat. To me it's like a drinking boogers, but whatever. No, I don't drink bookers. I hope now here's so here's here's the big question. Right, it's not about chrystal Pepsi or Pepsi, Pepsi or Die Pepsi? All right, here's a real cross. Right, we're talking. Let's get back to van Halen here. Are Your Team Dave or team Sammy or I? Or Are you team Gary? Oh, Geez, lwit, who would be team Gary? Probably you right, you be that one guy about new no is team. I think Gary has his fair amount of nutrius sweet or equal to to entice you, babe, rather than real sure, but I'm not a van Halen Guy. I've ever been a big Van Halen Fan, I mean at all. But if I were to in fact shoose, I would have to go with diamond dave a hundred and ten percent because, not being a true fan of their music, I'm going for the personality and the Panash all the way. All right, how about you? I'm I'm Sammy. I'm a Hagar. I'm a Haygar Fan. I like Dave too. I don't. I don't not like him. I I think just probably, and it's probably the because that I grew up with with Hagar. So by time I was listening to like kind of rock music like that is probably like late mid to late s and that's when Sammy was the lead singer. So yeah, it's like it kind of grew up with, like songs like why can't this be love? You know, that was one of their big ones. When it's love, like it's a lot of love songs, and then you get, you know, for unlawful cardinal knowledge and you have, you know, like we talked or talking about right now, right now, top of the world. So you know, there was that's kind of what I grew up with. So I feel like I kind of leaned towards, you know, Sammy, but I like Dave Gary. I like Gary when he was with extreme. That was that was a good mix, but not so much the one album they did with van Halen. But yeah, you know, I've already made it pretty well known that I am not averse to...

...sugar. So I think if any Sammy Hagar van Halen Song appealed to me at all more than any other, it might have to be pound cake. MMM. But yeah, like when I start talking about the track listing, like, I don't know, I could rattle off probably more songs that had David Lee Roth on them other than Sammy Hagar. And I remember I owned, when David Lee Roth went on his own, I own skyscraper. Oh Really? Yeah, I had that on our record. Yeah, so I was cool man. Yeah, that lucky me. You are lucky. I know because I work with you. Damn right, Mister, MR running mix, no sugar guy. That's right, that's right. Cool down, thanks. Let me. Let me cool it down a bit here, but let's heat it back up because we're going to talk about the hot one hundred chart. See this another good another good segue. But yeah, this song. I thought the song actually peaked a little bit higher. This song actually peaked at number fifty five on the US billboard hot one hundred back in March of one thousand, nine hundred and ninety two, and currently Van Halen has over twelve million monthly listeners on spotify, so pretty decent following still. But let's get back to the hot one hundred. The top five started with save the best for last by Vanessa Williams, and the top spot. It's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I love that song. Tears in heaven by don't say it, by Air Clapton, was number two. Remember the time, by Michael Jackson. Was Three. To be with you by Mr Big was for and I'm too sexy. By right said Fred was number five. That's a great song. Yeah, some other great tuos on two charts were I love your smile by Shanise at nine, at such a great tune. Beating the beast by Seline Dealon, and my boy pee Bo Bryson was at fourteen. Diamonds and pearls by prince in a new power generation was twenty one. Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana was twenty six one by you two was thirty. Mama, I'm coming home by Ozzy Osbourne, at thirty five.

I can't make you love me by Bonnie rate, at forty two. Another great tune in Bohemian rhapsody still kind of hanging on from Wayne's world. Was that forty nine? There there kind of rebirth of Bohemian rhapsody the second time around. Oh yeah, so, yeah, it's big. So that was huge. That was that was the that was the chart. Now how does this song compare to other songs on the album? Now, this was actually the first van Halen album I actually owned. I love this album. It starts off with their song pound cake, which you talked about before. That was the first single on this album, which, by the way, for unlawful carnage. Get it? Yeah, and every a many out there get it, Huh, and acurated together people. Yeah, yeah, anyway, Pou clever action. Yeah, that's it. Is, it is. And then he listened to pound cake and he listen lyrics. is like kind of makes sense that the song kicks the album off right. Eddie's using their drill in the guitar, which is Pretty Damn cool, great idea and has a really cool sound. The song musically is awesome lyrically and kind of mediocre with the lyrics, but the music I absolutely love. I could listen to that song all day. That we get Judgment Day, which is a cool tune. A handful of other good songs on the album, but what I found interesting is that their two biggest singles right now, on top of the world, were actually on the back half of the album. Not Saying you can't do that, just interesting that their two singles were put towards the back, or two of their singles were put towards the back. Now three hundred and sixteen, I love that song and actually makes you a little teary eyed. Now three hundred and sixteen is it's Wolfgang van Halen's birthday. That's Eddie Song and he wrote that for him, just a little guitar Ode to his son. And I remember listening to that when it came out and I liked it, and then I listened to it again when I became a dad and you know, it hit a little bit harder. You know is a little bit closer to home, and now with Eddie passing, you know it's on another level now. You know it's such a cool song, you know as good stuff. And then you have top of the world, great tune. I...

...feel like they use this all the time for sports teams winning championships in the early S. it's kind of the easy song to play. But this is all around the good album. I think right now fits in nicely. It definitely stands out. That's very kind of like piano heavy, but they tried some new things on this album, like the drill and the guitar and poundcake in the beginning of the album and and this song. So I think it's a good fit. But how about you? You liked any other songs on this album besides poundcake? I'm not. No, I'm not a big fan of this album, but I do get to say this. You know, for a guy who's so afraid of drinking crystal Pepsi because of the sugar content, is such a big as softly, I'm afraid if we cut open one of your veins, purecane sugar, which is poor, out of it. That's not nice. Why would you want to do I know, but I'm just saying, though. I mean, come on, you, you're just talking about three hundred and sixty and listen, the sentiment is true. Don't get you know. I agree with you. This lovely thing, but even you said that you're getting TIRI EIED, getting a little misty over this kind of stuff. We know you had teddy bear. That's what you are, drew. Yeah, I mean, and I also like listen to it right at you know, not too long after Eddie passed away. was that about a month ago now? So I mean it was, yeah, hearing it and then, you know, knowing what it was for. Yeah, it's yeah, don't cry now, we're on a be strong. You got an issue. He is a tissue, Yep, but lyrically right, getting back to right now. I think lyrics. I think the lyrics are great. It's a very motivational song. I feel like this hits even harder now I'm forty. When this came out I was like eleven or twelve song, like yeah, I got time. When you get a little older you realize you don't. So you need to seize every moment you can, and that's what the song is pretty much about. You know. Yeah, what. Well, what would you like to mention here, Dave? I guess I just think the very simplistic. There's not much to them. I when I originally looked at the lyrics, I thought, hey, any thirteen year old kid in a garage band could have written this. It wasn't like an act of a wonderful or talented lyricist. But I will admit this. Now we're talking...

...about age, where I'm at in my life, the lyrics make me feel like shit. Well, sometimes, sometimes they make me feel like crap. Yeah, I'm like, what have I accomplished? What have I done? Damn it, nofect drew, give me that tissue. I mean it's a lot. Sammy, make me question my life and all my choices. To Quila guisland bastard. Yeah, but I but no, I mean it's a lot of this is like Gris is like great dad advice. You know, the song starts off, you know, don't want to wait till tomorrow. Why put it off another day? One by one, little problems build up and stand in our way. Like that's like spot on advice, though. I mean you're right, it is. It is simplistic, but it's not wrong. It's listen, true, it's right. Now, remember the PSA's from when we're kids. It was like a one, I think, which is only local for me growing up in Massachusetts, but it was these thieves. They were run around a little kid and they're like, if to tell one lie, it leads to Moun other. If you tell little to lies. Oh brother, you're in trouble. Up to you ears. So like hearing that in this to me it's like this really simple. I don't know, I'm not overly impressed by it. I don't take a lot of meaning out of it. You know what I mean, Jellybean, fine, okay, I I'm sorry to be crapping on your parade here, but I'll why I'm not. I'm not overly impressed with these lyrics. Now, all right, so lyrics, hit me with something else. I'll let me hit you with this now. Okay, let's let's change gears and let's talk about the video. Now, the video. Actually rewatched it and I jotted down some of these the little like slogans that they had in there, and I'll tell you what, I'm going to read a handful of them off because they are insanely pertinent to this day, especially right now. We're recording this on November fourth, so we're still in the midst of the two and twenty election here, but it's it's interesting. So I'm just going to rattle some of them off right right now, Opportunity is passing you by right now. You could...

...be outside right like we always talk about, you know, people staring at screens, you know, and this, like I said, this was written in the early s, like thirty years ago almost, and I feel like now, like people definitely should be outside. I get outside more. Right now, guilt is turning someone inside out. This one right here really was like wow, right now, oil companies and old men are in control. You're not wrong, and nothing's changed in thirty years. Right now, nothing is more expensive than regret. That's that's pretty deep, man. You know, that's that's a great that's a great little statement there. Right now is just a space between ice ages. That makes me feel nice and insignificant. Right now, that truth is being obscured. Right now, science is building a better tomato. Now, I do like science, and they're beyond burgers. But but let's let's talk of some health nutritional facts. Your guys, just be careful, okay, because they're just because they're Vegan doesn't mean they're healthy. Right. Those things have way less cholesterol than regular burghers, but they have a ton of sodium in them. So just keep that in mind, people. All right, if you don't believe it, just check drew's freezer. That's right. Right now, someone's working too hard for minimum wage. Right now, your parents miss you. Right now, no one is safe from loneliness. This isn't a were in a pandemic. Right. That's pretty spot on. For Right now, right now, at time, is having its way with you, as it always does. Right now, our government is doing things we think only other countries do. Right now, you aren't doing what you most wish you were. Boy, I think about that every day, from nine hundred to five, and right now is harder than it looks. So, yeah, well, I will. I do have to say this is I think those little tidbits from the video are more impressive than the actual song lyrics. But what have we learned from any of these things over the past a few decades? Nothing, nothing, it's nothing's changed.

So, you know, we all had him flash before our eyes way back when and we're like, yeah, that's right, there are crusty old sons of pictures running oil and doing this in the government's up to no good and yes, let it go all right, thanks, Van Halen. Thanks. Yeah, we're just going to ignore that blissfully for the rest of our lives. Yeah, well, you know, they're they're calling it out, they're doing their job. They're they're, HMM, drawing attention to some things here. So, okay, you know right now, you know someone working too hard for minimum wage? Yeah, there's definitely people that are, you know, kind of getting the shift, so to speak. So, Oh, yeah, sure, everybody. Yeah, yeah, pass you baby, this song is but yeah, so that the song is basically just kind of get off your ass and live your life and do the things you need to do and what to do right now. Don't wait, get after it or only here for a short time. Even if you live to be a hundred, that's still a blip on the radar. So get after it. and which basically everything I just read and everything I just said, I feel like I should take this device and actually quit my day job. But you have of us have like no and how many of us have nine to five jobs that we hate? You know, how many of us are unhappy in a variety of situations, like a bad relationship, we hang out with people we don't necessarily like. You know, sometimes you got to do what's right for you. YEP, everybody raising their hands right now. Are Create enough wind to power all the earth's wind farms for the next century. Clean Energy. Man, I love it. Yeah, so all of us who raise your raise your hands if you're sure. We're sure. We hate our jobs and yeah, what have you. Yeah, totally. So now I feel miserable, I feel bad. Cheer me up, leave. This song is striking me down, man. Well, let's let's let's cheer it up, because we're at R at our final verdict here. So, all right, Dave, right now by Van Halen. Yeah, what do you think? Do you think the song is a legit hit, or do you think this is a song gone wrong? Okay, so here I am with my opinions on this is. I I've already stated everything before that would lead you to believe I'm going to say this is a song gone wrong. However, it is...

...a very well crafted little diddy. It has quite an extreme amount of relistenability. Wherein is it something that I'm clamoring for? No, I mentioned before I don't care for Van Halen. But has it aged incredibly well? Yes. Do we heed any of the messaging that drew mentioned from the video? Absolutely not, but if it came on the radio I would not be prone to change the dial. It does have a lot of elements that are key for a hit song. So therefore I'm going to say well crafted, sounds good, stands a test of time. So legit hit baby, all right, drew. Yeah, so I think right now by Van Halen, the song is very unique. You know, it starts off with a guitar legend, Barly, one of the best guitars of all time, playing a beautiful piano riff. Musically, once the song gets going, everything blends in perfectly. I think you know, Eddie's guitar is there. That's what he's known for, right, but it's not overpowering and sure he can take over a song with his guitar, but he's smartly knows what sounds good. So yeah, there's a guitar and the song there. He does have a solo in there, but he builds it in nicely. Sammy's lyrics. They're good, you know. Are they the best in the world? Maybe not, but I do think they are good. You know, it's not it's not wrong. It's, you know, like proper I think again, I think this is kind of like proper dad advice that would give your kids. You know, it is. I think his voice sounds great. The content is beyond perfect. This isn't your typical van Halen Song, but that's fine. And these guys traveling a little different, a little outside their comfort zone, and you know what, I think they struck golds and and the song alone is perfection, I think. And then when you add in the video. I haven't watched that probably since the mid S and I wish I had watched it since then and before now. But Holy Shit, the video is such a great concept and they nailed the execution. You know right now, it's the total package. Great Song, amazing video. Hell, throw me about crystal...

Pepsi Right now, because the song is a legit hit. You have what. I don't need to throw it. You idea. I'm lovel my closet and drink it. You. It's in your closet. Yeah, just what it's calling out. You. Drink me true, pop the CAP, drue. I'll tell you what, if Pepsi does bring it back, I will definitely buy a bottle and drink it right on the spot and, dude, we'll see what happens. God. Yeah, and please make it a talking soda. That's what it's going to take. It's going to need this. What I was just doing to you. The soda actually needs to in fact do the same thing. Needs to speak. Don't abandon me, drew, in your closet, Drewe hold on them, tricking my crystal pipsy, checking to make sure it's not possessed. All right. So, yeah, so we have we have our verdict here. We both we both think it's a legit hit. But HMM, let's check and see what the fans have to say about it, because we care and we want to hear what they have to say. You've got that right. All right, the fans have spoken and seventy four percent said this song is a legit hit. Huh, thought that would have been a little bit higher, to be honest with you. Like I could see how you know it. Maybe there's like some Van Hail fans out there that maybe aren't Sammy fans. I don't know. Maybe a would rather go with Dave, but I don't know. But we did get some feedback, which is pretty good. So at Ryan Boem said incredible song. At J Bowen something to said, no doubt really powered by that bad as video. In an era, in the early S, of such change and optimism, it really spoke to the Times. At Gengen defo said nothing about Van Halen is a hit and I stand by this forever. So thanks, JEN at. I am Pol Nique said, legit great song. It's not just a song, it's an anthem to get up and do it, that thing that's been burning inside you. Don't wait till tomorrow, do it right now. And this catchy as heck. And at Ravioli, I are said, I love that video too. So that's what we got. Yeah,...

...all right, and I'm going to beat a dead horse. I'm going to ask you. Is this part of your motivation mix? It's not. I feel like I need to add it, though. Okay, it's definitely on. It is definitely on my s mix that I have a like a separate van Hammon mix, and that's on there too. That's such a cop out, man. You keep giving me that excuse. It's on my s, but it's not on my frind from the S. I know, I know, I know, I know, but, like I've we've gone over this. That's why I called it beating a dead horse about how you have a mix for everything. You're like going to home depot mix correct. So you know. I know. I shop at Leves, okay, I'm sorry, free plug for both of them, I suppose, as if they care, but still, you know what I mean. Like, yeah, I'M gonna go buy I don't even know, ice mix something. I just a most random crap. I could imagine the tying my shoelaces mix coming from you. You know what I mean. What of what if people were velcrow? What? What? What do you what did that come from? While you're saying tying your shoelaces? But what if some yeah, L Crow, well, do you probably have that geared and ready to the I have vel crow shoes mix, or I wear flip flops with socks mix? I don't know. I don't assume you have everything under the Sun Ready to rock and roll. So when you say Oh, some, my my s the s mix is just such a broad thing. I need it. Well, yeah, specific, yeah, you know. Anyway. Okay, sorry about that. You always, you know, you always like to, you know, bust my chops about playlists. Hey, you love I'll you know. Yeah, I don't think I have one. You've got a billion at least. Yeah, if there's a bank's full of playlist, you'd be sitting on top of them like scrooge mcduck swimming in them, spit them out like watermelon seeds. But it did it. I'll tell you what. So, speaking of the the election, whoever wins the election, I feel like they should have they should open up like a department of playlists and they should hire me as like...
